Emile AOUN

In a society based on the rule of law, the conviction of an innocent person is considered more fatal than the release of a guilty person.

Dans une société basée sur la règle de droit, la condamnation d’une personne innocente est considérée comme plus fatale que la mise en liberté d’une personne coupable.

Mr. Emile Aoun (born in Beirut, Lebanon) was admitted to the Beirut Bar Association in 1995. Mr. Aoun was admitted to the List of Defence Counsel of the STL in 2009. His name figures on the list of counsel accredited at the International Criminal Court and has been appointed as a duty counsel in many cases related to the situations in the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Kenya.

Mr. Aoun is currently preparing his PhD at the Université de Paris II (Panthéon- Assas) on the perspective of the principle of equality of arms  in international criminal tribunals.

Mr. Aoun has been a lecturer at La Sagesse University (Faculty of Political Sciences and International Relations) since 2001 and at Antonine University (Faculty of Publicity) since 2009. He has also worked as an official trainer at the human rights institute at the Beirut Bar Association since 2006 in the field of International Law and Human Rights.

Mr. Aoun is the author of several published legal studies regarding Lebanon's accession to the International Criminal Court, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, and involvement of children in armed conflicts.

Mr. Aoun has a Bachelor's degree in Law from the St. Joseph University, a Bachelor's degree in Administrative and Political Sciences and in History. He holds two Masters, one in Public Law and one in Private Law.

In february 2012, Mr. Aoun has been assigned to protect the interest and rights of the accused Salim Ayyash in the case of Prosecutor v. Ayyash et al.

Starting the 1st of june 2016, Mr. Aoun was appointed as Lead Counsel for the Ayyash defence  team.

On the 1/7/2017, Mr Aoun was elected as member of the executive council of the International Criminal Court Bar Association (ICCBA).
